The Perspective Taking exercise is about building our capacity for compassion and empathy. When we make a mistake, we tend to explain it away as a result of our stress, or being tired. But when others make mistakes, we’re quick to make character attributions, like “what a jerk”.

For this exercise, find an example of a time in recent history when someone did something that upset or annoyed you. It could be a bad driver, someone who spoke rudely toward you, etc. Then, think of a number of reasons why that person might be a fundamentally good person who simply slipped up.

Try to imagine yourself behaving the same way. Under what circumstances (even if it would take extreme circumstances) might you end up behaving in the same way?
